Chapter Seven

Kara snuggled against him. Once upon a time, she’d been romantic. The little gestures, the kisses and touches… it all made her day. She lived for long mornings in bed, holding the man she loved. Being together. Being young. The gifts, the caresses, making love all night long. It was all so magical and sweet. All so tender and uncomplicated. If she could’ve bottled those moments, she would’ve.

Then she went to war. Year after year of war. Year after year of going into dangerous spaces to retrieve the brave.

Then Helgi. The danger of being with him. The anger. The screaming. The chasing and abuse. Every time he found her, he’d romanced her, only to try to kill her to “protect their love.” What kind of love was that? If the target of one’s love had to be killed to be protected, then it wasn’t really love.

Then she’d died the first time. The second time. The third. It never got easier.

Somehow sweet romance didn’t work. She wasn’t into BDSM, though she applauded anyone who was, but sweetness didn’t set the beat of her heart thundering. Why should it? Love wasn’t real. But Eric was. He had her thinking second thoughts. Not like other men.

She kissed him again. “Why do I feel so safe with you?”

“Because I won’t take advantage.” He patted her ass. “Come to bed.”

“Yours?” Where he’d invited her before? “Yes, please.” She didn’t need to sound so eager, but she didn’t care.

“Then welcome to my bed.” He kept her in his arms and carried her to the bedroom, placed her on the bed.

She liked the white walls. Or were they cream? She wasn’t sure. She’d never been in the hotel as a guest. Not in any capacity. She’d lived in Eerie for this round of her life and the elders didn’t want her or the other Valkyrie to hang out in the hotel.

Why not? The place was warm, inviting, and Eric was there. That was plenty of reason for her.

The softness and fresh scent enveloped her. This was comfort. No one wanted anything from her. She doubted she’d be able to keep her eyes open. It was barely seven in the evening, but she’d spent too many nights not sleeping. Too much time interrupted. She half-expected to be pressed into duty. Why not? She wasn’t ever not on the clock.

She crawled between the sheets with him. The bed smelled nice, but he smelled even better. Sin and sex. Clean, but dirty. Heat swirled in her body, and she tangled up with him. Cream slicked across her pussy lips. If he touched her, she’d combust. Being with him was the best.

He switched off the light. The remaining sun filtered through the curtains and stretched across the room. She hadn’t noticed much of it. All she knew was his arm around her.

“When you go on a mission, what is it like?” he asked. “I guess I should ask if you don’t mind me asking you that before I blurt it out.
